Konarka eyes aftermarket window film product

Konarka and Florida-based Arch Aluminum & Glass Co. are making steady progress after signing an advanced product development agreement in May this year.

To date, no aftermarket window film product has appeared, but Konarka has begun to move toward the manufacture of windows, according to a report filed by Window Film Magazine. The two companies are teaming up to develop a PV architectural glass product.

Dan Williams, vice president of product development for Konarka, shared that an aftermarket film is still on the company’s to-do list.

It has been highlighted that Konarka’s manufacturing process bears a strong resemblance to that of various types of window film already in production. In a roll-to-roll process, polymers are applied, followed by conductive layers—much the same way coaters and laminators create solar control or other film products.

“What we use in our manufacturing process is very much akin to those found in the printing and coating industries,” Williams told the publication.

As far as the deal between Konarka and Arch Aluminum & Glass is concerned, they are exploring development of a complete line of semi‐transparent, glass building integrated photovoltaic products called Active Solar Glass (ASG). The advanced joint development effort will not only integrate Konarka’s Power Plastic into glass panels that will generate power, but will incorporate passive solar technologies, including Low‐E coatings. This will make ASG not only energy‐producing, but also energy‐efficient, which means even lower building electricity costs.
